How to Teach Your Dog to Stop Barking

A dog that barks all the time may be more than just an annoyance; in some areas, loud day and night vocalizations are grounds for eviction. Unless you live in the country far from neighbors, teaching your dog to stop barking is critical.

Before you begin training, it's a good idea to figure out what causes your dog to bark. The following are some of the most common causes:

·         An immediate need

·         Security

Does your dog primarily bark when someone knocks on the door or when a car approaches? It's his natural instinct to protect you, and barking alerts others that he's on your side.

·         Isolation

When you leave your dog alone, does he bark? He could be dissatisfied or lonely. Consider hiring a dog walker during the day to give him a break while you're at work. If you believe a companion could help him relax, see Getting Cats and Dogs to Get Along.

What Isn't Working

·         yelling

Shouting "stop barking!" just increases the decibel level in your home. Your dog can also perceive your loud voice as good feedback.

·         Bribes

If you praise a dog for not barking, he will understand that barking equals a treat.

·        Muzzle

Using a mask to shut your dog's mouth for an extended amount of time is unethical and potentially risky.

What Works

Like in other routines, training a dog to stick to healthy ones early on is better than trying to alter behavior and disrupt negative ones later.

·         Workout

A sleepy dog is less likely to bark incessantly.

·       Change in place

BRing your dog inside if she is barking at any moving car and human on your porch or in your yard. If she barks inside, cover the windows with curtains or opaque film. Are there going to be jobs here? Request that a friend dog sit for you for a few hours and return your dog to his home.

·         2 commands should be taught

If your dog understands the fundamentals of sit and wait, he will even learn "talk" and "quiet." Begin barking at your dog before he joins in. Once he understands the order, offer it to him – but disrupt mid-bark with "peace," and praise him when he finishes.

·     Continuity

It should be exercised and reinforced, much like all other teaching, so the dog doesn't forget to be on his best behavior. All in the family should put the anti-barking steps you've implemented into action.

·         Necessary changes

When the dog barks unnecessarily during a training session, you should give him a correction (one firm pulls on the leash and a firm 'No barking.
